Jefferson’s own copy in which he penned about 500 lines on 50 pages of the printed work, and added 16 pages of original manuscript which have been inserted, besides numerous references, corrections, etc. From this copy, noted by Sabin, was printed “A new edition, prepared by J.W. Randolph, 1853”. Bound in at end is the original manuscript translation of Jefferson’s notes in foreign languages, 5 pp., made by Prof. Schele le de Vere of the University of Virginia, a copy of a letter from John B. Gibson, relating to the death of James Logan, a broadside: “A topographical analysis of the Commonwealth of Virginia, compiled for the years 1790-1”, and four original pen-and-ink and wash drawings as follows: “An eye-draught of the Mammoth Cave”, by C.W. Short for William Short, “Plan of the Madison and Amen’s Caverns”, by J. Peck, “A sketch of several antient fortifications, situate on the Little Miami River” by Charles de Krafft, and fortifications on the Scioto River. Mounted on one leaf is an autograph manuscript old style calendar by Jefferson. Bound in at beginning are 11 autographed letters in reference to the issue of a new edition of the “Notes”. Most of these letters are between Edward D. Ingraham, of Philadelphia, and John Spear Smith, written between 1845 and 1847. Jefferson’s autograph manuscript of his final revision of the “Notes on the state of Virginia”, signed as usual with “T” before signature letter I, and “J” after signature letter T. With all of the material used in the 1853 edition. Bound in red levant morocco, gilt tooled, gilt top, uncut: binding signed: R. Bedford. Jefferson – Randolph – Smith – Asay – Leiter copy.
