The second Keeper of the Ashmolean, Edward Lhuyd (1659/60?–1709), published the first catalogue of British fossils, the Lithophylacii Britannici ichnographia, in 1699. An expensively illustrated work, it had a limited print run, and was sponsored by several major London scientists, including Isaac Newton. This plate illustrates Lhuyd’s ninth class of fossils, ‘Ichthyodontes Cuspidati’, or petrified sharks’ teeth.
